Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

Definition
A condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behaviour.

Co-morbid Disorders

Definition
In medicine, co-morbidity is the presence of one or more additional diseases or disorders co-occurring with (that is, concomitant or concurrent with) a primary disease or disorder; in the countable sense of the term, a co-morbidity (plural co-morbidities) is each additional disorder or disease

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Definition
A childhood disorder that is defined by a pattern of hostile, disobedient, and defiant behaviors directed at adults or other authority figures. ODD is also characterized by children displaying angry and irritable moods, as well as argumentative and vindictive behaviors.


Sensory processing disorder (SPD; also known as sensory integration dysfunction)

Definition
A condition that exists when multisensory integration that is not adequately processed in order to provide appropriate responses to the demands of the environment.


Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Definition
Any of a range of behavioural disorders occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms as poor concentration, hyperactivity, and learning difficulties.

Any of a range of behavioural disorders occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms as poor concentration, hyperactivity, and learning difficulties.


Specific Learning Difficulty’ (SpLD)

Definition
A term that refers to a difference or difficulty with particular aspects of learning. The most common SpLDs are dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.


Anxiety

Definition
A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.


Tourettesyndrome (TS or simply Tourette’s)

Definition
A common neuropsychiatric disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. … Tourette’s is defined as part of a spectrum of tic disorders, which includes provisional, transient and persistent (chronic) tics.


Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Definition
An anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, images, and sensations (obsessions) and engage in behaviors or mental acts in response to these thoughts or obsessions. Often the person carries out the behaviors to reduce the impact or get rid of the obsessive thoughts, but this only brings temporary relief. Not performing the obsessive rituals can cause great anxiety.


Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)

Definition
A motor skills disorder that affects five to six percent of all school-aged children. … DCD occurs when a delay in the development of motor skills, or difficulty coordinating movements, results in a child being unable to perform common, everyday tasks.


Giftedness (DMS)

Definition
Normal giftedness can easily be confused with DSM mental disorder. Gifted kids may talk a lot, have high levels of energy, and be impulsive or inattentive or distractible in some settings –similar to symptoms of ADHD. … “Giftedness is not always seen as a socially positive and valued trait.


Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)

Definition
A hearing problem that affects about 5% of school-aged children. Kids with this condition can’t process what they hear in the same way other kids do because their ears and brain don’t fully coordinate.

Definition
A state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, feelings, and sense of well-being.
